Hello! My name is Anine and I am an illustrator and recent graduate of Edinburgh College of Art.
Hello Anine! first of all I really love your work. I'm currently at college studying art but next year I hope to go to ECA and study illustration, so I was wondering if you had any advice on what to expect or what could help me to gain a place on the course? I've been to the open day recently and it's a beautiful place.

Hi Laura and thank you for liking my work!

I don’t really know how to answer this, but bear with me - I started my first year at ECA in 2009, and the place has changed a lot since then and it’ll keep changing now I have left (sniff). Also, I spent last year working as Graduate Studio Assistant in the Illustration department, which made me see things a bit more from the staff perspective. I did enjoy my time at ECA (both as a student and staff), but my experiences are not really up to date anymore and thus might not be that useful to you.

However! Mhairi, who is now in 3rd year, has written smart words about ECA and applying to art school in general here, it’s well worth checking out! Wise words indeed.

Art school is really what you make of it, and each year has its own dynamic just because of all the different people on the course. Go to all the classes and events, if possible. The more love and enthusiasm you put in, the more you’ll learn and progress.

I hope this is a bit helpful - all the best for your future!

I’m very much enjoying doing daily colour blocks à la Tiffany Ford - here’s another week of clothes. Search for #daily color block to see what other illustrators wrap themselves in!

Look who’s back! I’m currently re-working the book I made for my degree show, including new coats for the main characters. The balance between cute and eerie is difficult to get right.

Papercut work in progress - one of the four layers that’ll go into this piece. I’m quite pleased with it so far!

I have a shop now! It’s here: https://anineillustration.bigcartel.com/
For now all that’s in it is my beetle boxes, which are would make an excellent present for that person you know who has a wall they can put stuff on. I’ll be adding more things soon, so keep those eyes peeled.

Some more beetles I made for an exhibition earlier this year. These guys will be looking for a new home soon!
